The Road to Longform: The Legacy and Future of Black Writing

I began this project, I was reminded of a 10-page essay I completed during undergrad. It was the most grueling writing piece I had to turn in at that point. In the end, I was very proud of my work and the achievements that followed because of it. I learned a lot about my ability to do the hard thing and use my mind to create great bodies of work.

My intent with my long-form article is to inform and introduce a new way of looking at literature. Also, putting black writers at the forefront and acknowledging the work that has been put in to bring their stories to the world while facing adversity, criticism, and attempts to be boxed in.

Those who paved the way and sacrificed their lives to read and write created a lane for black writers today to have the freedom to express themselves and put great bodies of work out that the world has not seen before.

Using social media platforms to advertise is a great and easy way to get the word out to others. With the impact of social media today, your work can essentially “go viral”, resulting in you building a community of people who are interested in your work, which can lead to other opportunities.

The only thing is that the content does have to be appealing to the eye, or else, most people will not stick around to read the caption or visit your page. If you can grab the viewer’s attention based on a quick look, they will most likely stay to view the post in its entirety.

I decided to create an Instagram post that would work well to promote my article. Aesthetics is a key component of how much a piece of content is consumed.

My post in this case is “aesthetically pleasing,” which would intrigue my followers, and even non-followers, to want to not only read my article but also read the books listed. Instagram is a great platform to build a brand and following based on creativity that can be consumed quickly.

I plan to continue to work on my medium article, and as I do so, I will keep the attention span of my audience in mind with formatting, style, and even my writing. Making sure to keep the readers engaged.
